With so many options, choosing the perfect lighting fixtures for your outdoor spaces can be overwhelming. If you’re looking to move beyond traditional choices like string lights and lanterns, here are the top 5 outdoor lighting trends of 2024 to brighten your space and complement various décor styles:

1. Pendant Lighting

Elevate your backyard’s style and create a cozy atmosphere by hanging pendant lights from trees, pergolas, and patio roofs. Available in a wide array of materials, including bamboo and jute, pendant lights offer endless design possibilities from modern to classic. Pendant lights are at their best when centered over conversation areas but, no matter where you put them, they serve as eye-catching focal points.

2. Bulb Strings

For a romantic or cozy backyard ambiance that goes beyond typical fairy lights, consider bulb strings (or “string lights”). The types that feature mid-sized bulbs in warm colors emit an inviting glow that enhances the overall ambiance of an outdoor area.

Caution: For safety, keep electrical lights away from water. Though these types of lights can create a mood when near a whirlpool spa, as shown in the photo, be sure to keep all types of plug-in lighting out of reach from the water—and make sure they are connected to a GFCI receptacle.

3. Fence Lighting

To light your entire yard in an understated way, try incorporating LED lights along your fence line at regular intervals. This subtle approach, as seen in the linked image, illuminates the fence and surrounding areas with a soft glow, creating a visually appealing and safe backyard environment. This is a great technique for lighting underused areas of the yard.

4. Layered Lighting

Another effective lighting technique is to combine various types of lighting fixtures within a given space. In the featured image, string lights and an overhead fixture collaborate to create a well-lit and inviting atmosphere. The overhead fixture provides direct illumination as a focal point, while string lights add a complementary touch. Experiment with different light sources to get the effect that works best for you.

5. Plant Lights

Love how welcoming string lights look on trees and shrubs, but want to try something unique? Try stake lights in your plants. These spotlight-style lights do a great job of dramatically highlighting plants at night. You can opt for small solar lights to cast a halo of light around plants, or spray light across larger plants to emphasize the foliage and create a striking focal point.
